Is Korean hard?

So what’s involved if you want to learn Korean … and is it hard?!

• The Korean language is not closely related to any other language, although some of the grammar is a little similar to that of Japanese.
• There are a number of dialects of Korean, but the language of Seoul, which is regarded as the standard, is widely used and understood everywhere.
• The basics of Korean are not very difficult to learn, and you will find that you can quite easily express a number of everyday concepts. An introductory course will also present many aspects of Korean culture.
• Korean pronunciation is not that hard; it doesn’t have the tone system which can be tricky in Chinese.
• Korean is written in its own unique system called Hangul; this is much more straightforward than the writing systems of Chinese or Japanese. However, it is in any case possible to learn some of the spoken language without worrying about the writing; you can use our letters to represent Korean sounds.
• Like Japanese, Korean has different levels of politeness, but you will learn to use a form which is widely accepted.
• As you proceed with your study of Korean, you will see that it does work very differently from English, and there are a number of new concepts to become familiar with. If you can persevere, you will acquire a feel for the language and will find your progress enormously rewarding!
