So how useful is Russian?
- Russia is the largest country in the world, and although many different languages are spoken there, Russian is the lingua franca for the whole country; it is also widely used in the independent states which were formerly part of the USSR, from Ukraine to Armenia to Uzbekistan.
- Russia has enormous mineral reserves, and a wide range of industries; after the hard times of the 1990s, the economy is now picking up rapidly. Developing economic and political relationships with Russia is important for all western-oriented countries.
- Contrary, perhaps, to the image they have, the Russian people are often very warm and passionate, especially when you get beneath the surface, and strong friendships can be made. Having a knowledge of the Russian language will be an invaluable entrĂ©e into the Russians’ world.
- Russia has a tremendous literary heritage, and a long and varied cultural history, which can be seen in places ranging from the eighteenth-century elegance of St Petersburg to the older traditions of Moscow and some of the smaller cities.
- Russia is also renowned for its music and ballet, which can be enjoyed in the course of a visit to the major centres.
- Siberia offers a unique travel experience, especially to those in search of an intrepid journey!
- Many westerners, having visited Russia, become hooked on the place – there may well be things you don’t like about it, but it has an intensity which can make other countries seem shallow in comparison.
- And don’t think Russia is always freezing! Summers are pleasantly warm in all the major centres. That said, the intense winter cold is definitely something to experience if you can…
